CHICAGO - Sparked by three hits, including a pair of triples, and five RBI by freshman first baseman Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel), the Saint Xavier University baseball team opened its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule in a big way with a 15-5 victory in seven innings over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Friday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The game, originally scheduled for nine innings but called early due to the 10-run margin, was also the home opener of the 2011 season for the Cougars. SXU racked up 15 hits in the contest, including six in the first inning which helped give the team a quick 7-0 advantage.

Junior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) posted four hits, all singles, to help lead Saint Xavier's offensive surge Friday. He also finished with two runs scored and a RBI in the game. Junior catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) also had a solid outing for SXU going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI. Senior right-hander Ken Hurta (Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) got the victory (2-2) on the mound for the Cougars throwing all seven innings and allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first frame, Saint Xavier batted through its order en route to a seven-run inning off CCSJ sophomore starter Jonathan Cap. Cap gave up six hits and three walks in the opening frame to put the Crimson Wave behind by seven runs. Calumet got its offense in gear in the top of the second and plated four runs off a pair of singles, a walk, a hit batsman and two fielding errors. Each team added a run in the third inning with SXU's coming on a stolen base by freshman left fielder Corey Lasky (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson). The Cougars would provide the rest of the game's offense with two runs coming in the sixth inning off a RBI apiece for junior designated hitter Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and Myjak. After a two-RBI single to left field by Pipolo in the seventh, the game would end three batters later on a walk by sophomore third baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) with the bases loaded.

Saint Xavier (7-12-1 overall) wraps up its conference series with the Crimson Wave with a road doubleheader on Saturday, March 19. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (central) start in Gary, Ind.
