Milwaukee, Wis. - Three different Saint Xavier University players finished with double-digit totals in kills, but Milwaukee School of Engineering was able to come away with a hard-fought win in an exciting men's volleyball match that went down to the wire Tuesday night at the Kern Center in Milwaukee, Wis. The match was decided in five sets with SXU winning the opening one, 25-20, but MSOE taking the next two, 27-25 and 25-23. The Cougars would win the fourth set by a 10-point margin, 25-15, but could not maintain a late lead in the final set falling 19-17. Sophomore outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) led the offensive attack for Saint Xavier with 19 kills, while sophomore right side hitter Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and freshman outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) posted 16 and 15 kills, respectively.
Freshman setter Kevin Maxwell (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) tallied 50 assists in the match for the Cougars, while sophomore middle blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) posted 11 block assists. Saint Xavier really put it all together in the fourth set of the match recording 14 kills as a team to just one attack error for a .448 attack percentage. The Cougars led 17-16 late in the fifth and deciding set, but three straight points for MSOE decided the match.
Saint Xavier (5-13 overall/5-5 MAMVIC) hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering on Thursday, March 17, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
