Matt Yerkes, a senior at Saint Xavier University from Palos Heights, Ill., is currently in his second season on the men's volleyball team. Yerkes is also a member of the SXU football team. He is an outside hitter for the volleyball team and a defensive lineman for the football team. Yerkes is also working toward a major in business.
Why did you choose to come to Saint Xavier?
I started school at Western Illinois University as a walk on. After my third semester, I chose Saint Xavier University, because I wanted to play on a winning football program. Also, I wanted to be closer to home, where my family and friends could come see me play and not have to travel far.
What are your goals for this season?
One goal...win the national championship.
What do you think you contribute to the Athletic Program?
I contribute a positive attitude to coaches and my teammates. I lead by example and support each of the athletic teams the best I can.
Do you have any Pre-game Rituals?
The night before a game I visualize myself making plays. I listen to music and make sure to eat a good meal before games.
Who would you say is your favorite athlete?
I have more than one favorite athlete. I am a big fan of Patrick Kane, Derrick Rose and Tom Brady.
What is your involvement on campus?
Since I have been at SXU, I have been involved in the SAB (Student Activities Board) Service Day each year. It's a great way to serve others and help those in need.
Do you have a favorite quote/ motto to live by?
One of my favorite quotes is "If you ain't first, you're last" said by Ricky Bobby a.k.a. Will Ferrell. This quote makes me laugh and Will Ferrell is one of my favorite actors.
Who would you say is your role model?
I have always considered my father as my role model. He works hard to support his family and looks out for the good of others.
Tell us an embarrassing or funny moment that happened during practice or a game?
Yes, I fell on my face after being hit by a ball between the legs.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan on working at Yerkes plumbing. It's a family owned company started by my great grandfather, and I want to keep the business going.
