Chillicothe, Ohio -
Freshman left fielder Brad Myjak
(Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) had a nice showing at the plate for Saint Xavier University, but it was not enough to help the Cougars earn a win Sunday dropping a doubleheader to Notre Dame College (Ohio) at Paints Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. SXU dropped the first game, 11-7, and fell behind early in game two to eventually fall by a score of 7-3. Myjak racked up four hits over both games, including a double, to go along with two RBI and two runs scored on the day.
opening game, the Cougars led 2-1 after the first inning behind a RBI groundout
by junior designated hitter Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and
a RBI single from Myjak. However, Notre
Dame College scored in each of the next four innings to build an 11-2 advantage
heading into the final inning. The Saint
Xavier bats made a valiant effort to rally scoring five runs in the bottom of
the seventh, but the deficit was too big.
Freshman Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) took the loss
(1-1) on the mound for the Cougars throwing the first four innings and allowing
eight hits, seven runs (six earned) and three walks with four strikeouts.
In the second
contest, an early first-inning error proved costly as Notre Dame plated five
unearned runs with two outs to take a 5-0 lead.
Freshman outfielder Corey Lasky (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) recorded
a RBI single and freshman shortstop Justin Smykowski (Crestwood, Ill./Shepard)
posted a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to cut into the early
deficit. A RBI single by sophomore
catcher Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) in the top of the fourth
would close the gap to two runs, 5-3, but that was as close as it would
get. NDC would add a run apiece in the fourth
and sixth innings to pick up the 7-3 victory.
Freshman Scott Koziol (Burbank, Ill./St. Laurence) suffered the loss
(1-2) giving up two hits, five runs (none earned) and seven walks with a pair
of strikeouts over 1.1 innings as the starter.
Saint Xavier (6-12-1 overall) opens its Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate at home on Friday, March 18,
against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The nine-inning game is scheduled
for a 3:30 p.m. start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
