CHICAGO - Janelle Smith, a senior midfielder at Vermilion High School in Vermilion, Ohio, has signed a letter of intent to continue both her athletic and academic career at Saint Xavier University as a member of the Cougar women's soccer program. She was coached by Tony Dimacchia during her prep career at Vermilion.
Smith is the daughter of Howard and Sandra Smith of Vermilion. She plans to pursue a degree in biology (pre-med) next year at Saint Xavier University. Last season, Saint Xavier finished with an overall record of 19-4-0 (a new school record) and a No. 8 national ranking in the NAIA. The Cougars also qualified for the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in the program's 10-year history.
"Janelle will come into a midfield group that is the best in the Region VII," said Saint Xavier University women's soccer coach Derek Begich. "She has great vision and distributes the ball well. Janelle also possesses a good team mentality and we are very excited to have her join our program."
