Junior guard Marissa Young
(Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) led the way with 16 points and seven assists, but it was a total team effort as No. 16 ranked and No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University pulled away early for a convincing 95-52 win over No. 5 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) Thursday night in the semifinals of the 2011 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (23-6 overall) logged season-highs in both field goal percentage and assists on the night hitting an impressive 65 percent (41-for-63) from the field and dishing out 34 assists. SXU was dominant from start to finish Thursday jumping out to a 9-0 lead early and leading 53-26 at the break.
guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) also had a nice outing for the
Cougars dropping 15 points and seven assists, while senior guard Shalonda Young
(Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and finished
with 14 points to go along with five rebounds, six assists and three
blocks. Junior forward Mary Kusner (Des
Plaines, Ill./Maine West) came off the bench to contribute 11 points and four
rebounds. Junior forward Brittany Jones
(Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) played solid as well with nine points and four
blocked shots. In fact, 10 of the 11 players
on the SXU roster scored in Thursday's game and all 11 recorded at least a
rebound. The Fighting Saints were led by
junior guard Julie Schiffler, who finished with 11 points.
Saint Xavier (23-6 overall/9-1 CCAC) advances to Saturday's CCAC Tournament championship game and will host No. 2 seed and No. 12 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
