CHICAGO - Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) finished with a huge double-double performance of 20 points and 18 rebounds to pace the surging No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team to a 71-41 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Robert Morris University (Ill.) Saturday evening at the Gentile Center in Chicago. The Cougars (22-6 overall/9-1 CCAC) wrap up their 2010-11 regular season slate with their ninth straight win and 13th in their last 14 games. SXU never trailed in Saturday's contest jumping out to an early 8-0 lead and using a 28-0 scoring run that began midway through the first half to pull away for good.
Other top performers for the Cougars included: senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) with 13 points and five assists, junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) with 13 points and five rebounds and junior forward Brittany Jones (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Saint Xavier used a tough defense to frustrate the Robert Morris shooters throughout the game limiting the Eagles to just 23 percent (17-for-74) shooting from the field. SXU shot 46 percent (30-for-65) in the game and out-rebounded RMU, 55-43, for the game. The Cougars also tallied 17 assists as a team.
Saint Xavier (22-6 overall/9-1 CCAC) earns a first-round bye in next week's CCAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, March 1. The Cougars will host the winner of Tuesday's No. 4 seed Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) and No. 5 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) match-up on Thursday, March 3. The game will start at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
