South Bend, Ind. - Led by 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists from senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic), the No. 18 Saint Xavier University women's basketball team moved one step closer to a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season title with a 68-62 road win over Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars (20-6 overall/7-1 CCAC) have hit a nice stride winning seven straight and 11 of their last 12 games. The game was tight throughout with the score tied, 31-31, at the half and SXU able to hit key free throws in the closing minutes to seal the six-point victory over the Titans.
Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) also scored in double figures Saturday for Saint Xavier finishing with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Indiana-South Bend's senior forward Katie Hacker posted a game-high 24 points and moved up to No. 3 on IUSB's all-time scoring list. The Titans stormed out of the gate opening up a quick 8-0 lead, and eventually holding as much as a 12-point advantage, before the Cougars began to slowly chip into the lead. As the clock wound down in the half, SXU was able to get the game tied and the two teams headed to the break tied. Out of the half, the teams traded baskets before the Titans were able to open up a 44-39 lead midway through the period. However, the Cougars scored the next eight points, including a pair of triples, and the Titans committed three turnovers as the Cougars took control of the game. Several times over the final few minutes, the Titans were able to close the margin to one, but SXU connected on better than 75 percent of its free throws and were able to hold on down the stretch.
Saint Xavier (20-6 overall/7-1 CCAC) hosts its final home game of the 2010-11 regular season on Tuesday, February 22, against CCAC rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. and both of SXU's two seniors, Barone and Young, will be honored prior to tip-off.
