Davenport, Iowa - Sophomore right side hitter Evan Muys (Orland
Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished with seven kills, five digs and four total blocks
(one solo, three assists), but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball
team suffered its first conference loss in the Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate
Conference (MAMVIC) Wednesday night falling to No. 6 Saint Ambrose University
(Iowa) at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa.
The Cougars (3-7 overall/3-1 MAMVIC) got off to a slow start dropping
the first match by a score of 25-8, but played the Fighting Bees tough the rest
of the way. SXU lost the second set
(25-27), won the third set (25-22) and lost the match in the fourth set
(17-25).
Sophomore outside
hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) also played tough for
the Cougars finishing the night with seven kills and seven digs. Defensively, both freshmen John O'Connell
(Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) and Johnathan Hernandez (Berwyn,
Ill./Morton CC/Morton) were solid.
O'Connell logged team-bests of two solo blocks and five block assists,
while Hernandez led the team with 11 digs.
Freshman setter Kevin Maxwell (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) helped create
the offensive attack for SXU with 28 assists.
Saint Xavier (3-7
overall/3-1 MAMVIC) hosts a tri-match on Friday, February 25, with MAMVIC foes
Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and Siena Heights University (Mich.). The Cougars will face off against the
Fighting Bees at 4 p.m. and then take on the Lancers in the 8 p.m. match that
evening at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
