Naperville, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University men's indoor track team took part in the Chicagoland Championships hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill., on Saturday, February 11. Highlights for the Cougars included: freshman Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) in the 60-meter dash in 7.26 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.90 as well as a seventh-place finish for the distance medley relay (DMR) team of junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton), sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice) and junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew).
Rychel later finished with a solid time of 4:27 in the mile. Hummer turned in a impressive 2:01 in the 800-meter run. Finally, the quartet of freshman Izak Velasquez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), freshman Chris Sarna (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg), freshman Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and junior Rich Eber (Oak Lawn, Ill./Illinois State University/Brother Rice) logged times of 9:06, 9:09, 9:16 and 9:26, respectively, in the 3000-meter run. Coach Ed McAllister was satisfied by his team's performances.
"I thought that we performed relatively well," said McAllister. "The season has progressed nicely and I feel that we still have the chance to turn in national qualifying times for at least two of our runners."
Saint Xavier completes its indoor regular season schedule on Saturday, February 19, at the University of Chicago's Margaret Bradley "Last Chance" Meet. The meet begins at 12:00 p.m. in Chicago.
