CHICAGO - Behind game-highs of 22 points and eight rebounds by senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), the No. 18 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team rode a strong first-half performance to a 68-55 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win over Roosevelt University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago. The Cougars (18-6 overall/5-1 CCAC) had little difficulty establishing a big lead early building a 19-4 advantage in the game‘s opening six minutes capped by a lay-up by Young. SXU led 43-22 at the halftime break after shooting 54 percent (14-for-26) from the field in the first half.
Senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a nice outing for the Cougars finishing with 14 points, five assists and three steals. Junior forward Brittany Jones (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and posted nine points, four rebounds and three blocks for Saint Xavier. The Lakers shot just 23 percent (6-for-26) in the first half and 32 percent (18-for-57) for the game. SXU also tallied 13 steals as a team, which helped lead to 26 turnovers by Roosevelt.
Saint Xavier (18-6 overall/5-1 CCAC) returns home for a huge conference match-up against No. 13 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Tuesday, February 15. The game will start at 5 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
