CHICAGO - Led by 24 points and seven rebounds by
freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), the Saint Xavier
University men's basketball team ended its five-game losing streak with a 96-67
victory over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Wednesday night at the Shannon
Center in Chicago. The Cougars (16-10
overall) took control of the game midway through the first half using a 22-0
scoring run to build a 36-11 advantage and then took a 50-20 lead into the
locker room at halftime. SXU hit a
stellar 72 percent (18-for-25) of its shots from the floor in first-half action.
contributors for the Cougars Wednesday were freshman forward Mark Peters
(Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) with 18 points and eight rebounds as well as
junior forward Zach Opheim (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) with 13 points and
six rebounds. Senior guard Marco Samimy
(Chicago, Ill./CISC-Northtown Academy) came off the bench to drop in 12 points
for SXU, while junior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac)
chipped in 11 points. Sophomore point
guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) hit a new career-high by
dishing out 11 assists. As a team, the
Cougars shot 63 percent (37-for-59) of its total shots from the field in
Saint Xavier (16-10
overall/1-5 CCAC) takes the weekend off before returning to Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Tuesday, February 15, with a home
game against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.).
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
