Junior Brandon Hummer just missed a national qualifying standard

CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team was kept busy this past weekend with a split schedule involving meets at both Carthage College (Wis.) on Friday, January 28, and Illinois Wesleyan University (Ill.) on Saturday, January 29. Junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) led the Cougar squad at the Carthage meet with a winning 1000-meter run in a time of 2:34.31, narrowly missing the national qualifying standard in that event. Hummer showed his stamina by coming back on Saturday and running a respectable 2:00.29 at the Titan Open at Illinois Wesleyan.


Hummer was followed by freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in the 1000, who finished in second place in 2:42.50. Additional highlights for the Cougars were: junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice), who finished ninth in the 600-meter run at 1:30.45 and freshman Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community), who took an eighth-place finish in the 55-meter dash in 6.77 seconds. On Saturday, junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the way for the Cougars running 4:31.06 to win the mile at the Titan Open. Strong showing were also accomplished by freshmen Izak Velasquez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and Chris Sarna (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) in the 3000-meter run in times of 9:22.20 and 9:34.34, respectively.

Saint Xavier continues its indoor season on Saturday, February 5, with the IWU Invitational on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind. The meet is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. (eastern).
