CHICAGO - Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) came
into Saturday's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's
basketball match-up with No. 10 ranked Saint Xavier University looking to
extend its school-record 14-game win streak and make a statement against a
nationally-ranked NAIA opponent.
Thankfully for the Cougars, senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet,
Ill./Marian Catholic) had a different plan in mind. With 13 of her game-best 19 points coming in
the first half, Barone led SXU to a 37-23 halftime lead and carried the
momentum to a 69-52 conference victory over the visiting Titans Saturday
afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
In addition, senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech)
surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for her four-year career with the Cougars.
Young had an
impressive all-around effort in Saturday's win recording 12 points, seven
rebounds, six assists and three steals.
She came into the game with 999 career points and broke the 1,000-point
barrier on a short jumper just two minutes and 44 seconds into play. Junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St.
Joseph's College/Monroe) also played well for Saint Xavier with 13 points and
seven rebounds, while junior forward Mary Kusner (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West)
provided a big lift off the bench with 10 points and three boards. Senior guard Katie Hacker led IUSB with a
double-double effort of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
the first half, the Cougars used a 15-4 scoring run to take a 24-12 lead with
just seven minutes remaining in the first half.
SXU extended the lead later in the frame and led by as many as 17 points
before taking a 14-point advantage into the locker room. The second half was more of the same as the
Cougars never let their lead get below double figures. SXU shot a stellar 57 percent (13-for-23)
from the field in first-half action to set the tone for the rest of the game.
Saint Xavier (14-6
overall/2-1 CCAC) opens the month of February with a road match-up against CCAC
rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, February 1. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off in
