CHICAGO - Sophomore right side hitter Evan Muys (Orland
Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished with 11 kills and a match-best 15 digs as Saint
Xavier University rolled to a big Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate
Conference (MAMVIC) win over Clarke University (Iowa) in its home opener Friday
night at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
The Cougars (2-1 overall) took the thrilling match in three sets by
scores of 27-25, 27-25 and 25-23. SXU
got some payback against the Crusaders, the team that ended the Cougars' first
season in the opening round of the 2010 MAMVIC East Division Tournament last
April. Clarke falls to 4-2 overall and
2-1 in the conference standings with the loss.
hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) shined as well for
SXU Friday posting a match-high 16 kills on the night. Freshman libero Johnathan Hernandez (Berwyn,
Ill./Morton CC/Morton HS) was also solid defensively for Saint Xavier with 14
digs, while freshman middle blocker John O'Connell (Evergreen Park,
Ill./Brother Rice) posted 10 total blocks (two solos, eight assists). Clarke was paced offensively by senior
outside hitter Alex Wilharm. Wilharm
finished the match with nine kills.
Despite SXU winning in three straight sets, the entire match was
extremely tight with the first two sets going past the normal 25-point
Saint Xavier (2-1
overall/2-0 MAMVIC) heads to St. Charles, Mo., next weekend to take part in the
two-day Lindenwood University Tournament.
The Cougars kick off the first of five matches in the tournament with a
3 p.m. match on Friday, February 4, against the host Lions.
