Findlay, Ohio -Thirteen Saint Xavier University football players were recently named to the 2010 Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) All-Academic Team for their impressive work in the classroom during their collegiate careers. To qualify for the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), be a junior or senior in academic standing and have made a contribution to the team on the playing field. SXU football coach Mike Feminis was impressed, but not at all surprised, with the number of his players who earned a spot on the all-academic squad.

"We tell our players early on that the No. 1 priority here is to get an education and it does not surprise me that the message has been instilled in so many of our upperclassmen," said Feminis. "We have a lot of very intelligent players on this team and it is one of the reasons we have been so successful over the last decade. Many of these guys excel at everything they put their minds to, and so they work hard to not just perform well on the field, but on the academic side as well."

The list of Cougars making the 2010 MSFA All-Academic Team includes (in alphabetical order): junior defensive lineman Patrick Appino (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), senior long snapper Brian Casson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), senior defensive back Pat Garrity (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), senior defensive lineman Tom Gbur (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), senior defensive back Pat Geary (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), junior defensive back Justin Johnson (Rochelle, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Rochelle), senior quarterback Anthony Kropp (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East), junior defensive lineman Shane Liston (Chicago, Ill./University of Dayton/Joliet Catholic), senior defensive end Michael Prosser (Rockton, Ill./Rockton-Hononegah), senior defensive back Drew Rogowski (Griffith, Ind./Griffith), senior linebacker Ryan Searls (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), senior linebacker Brendan Sheehy (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and senior wide receiver Xavier Torres (Chicago, Ill./Central Michigan University/Lane Tech).

Saint Xavier had a record-breaking campaign in 2010 finishing 13-1 overall and winning the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League title for the second straight year. The Cougars swept through the regular season again with a perfect 11-0 mark and were ranked as high as No. 3 in the NAIA's weekly Top 25 Poll. SXU qualified for the semifinals of the NAIA Championship Series for the third time in the past four seasons, but lost to eventual national champion Carroll College (Mont.) in Helena, Mont.
