Bourbonnais, Ill. - Senior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Snellville) was the lone Saint Xavier University player to score in double figures with 16 points in a tough 68-41 loss to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Tuesday night at McHie Arena in Bourbonnais, Ill. A poor shooting performance told the tale as the Cougars hit just 27 percent (14-for-52) of its total shots from the field, including only one of their 23 attempts (four percent) from three-point range. The 41-point output was the lowest of the season for SXU with 14 of those coming in the second half.
The game was tight early on with ONU clinging to a two-point lead, 19-17, midway through the first half. However, the Tigers used an 11-2 scoring run over the next five minutes of play to take an 11-point lead, 30-19, with just under five minutes remaining in the opening frame. Olivet Nazarene would carry the 11-point advantage into the locker room at halftime by a score of 38-27. The second half started fine with the Cougars hitting some big shots early in the period to close the gap to just five points, 40-35, with 15:43 to play in the game. Unfortunately, SXU went ice cold from the field the rest of the way hitting just one field goal and four free throws to score six points over the game's final 15 minutes.
Saint Xavier (15-7 overall/1-2 CCAC) heads back to Chicago and will continue conference play on Saturday, January 29, with a match-up against Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
