Bourbonnais, Ill. - It was not the outing that No. 10 ranked Saint Xavier University had hoped for against another top-ranked NAIA foe and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The Cougars committed 28 turnovers, including 16 in the second half, and fell 92-72 to the No. 21 ranked Tigers Tuesday evening at McHie Arena in Bourbonnais, Ill. SXU had some momentum just before halftime tying the game at 42-42 with a 9-0 scoring run over the final four minutes of the opening frame, but were outscored 31-14 over the first 11 minutes of the second half committing 13 turnovers during the span.
Senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) and senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) each scored 17 points for the Cougars, while junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) chipped in 16 points and game-best 12 rebounds. Junior guard Stephanie Denius had the hot hand for ONU leading all scorers with 18 points, including five three-pointers. SXU had difficulty finding its offensive rhythm as well in the second half hitting just 32 percent (12-for-37) of its shots from the field after the break.
Saint Xavier (13-6 overall/1-1 CCAC) will be tested again on Saturday, January 29, with a conference game against Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB), a team currently riding a 13-game win streak. The big CCAC match-up is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
