Joliet, Ill. - Marking the seventh time this season that
a Saint Xavier University women's basketball player has claimed the honor, senior
point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) was named the
Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Division I
Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon by the conference office. Barone helped the Cougars to a pair of big non-conference
victories over No. 24 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) and Purdue
University-Calumet (Ind.). Senior guard
Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and junior guard Marissa Young
(Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) have each received three of the
previous 11 CCAC Player of the Week honors awarded this season for SXU.
In Saint Xavier's 84-62 home win over No. 24 Cardinal
Stritch, Barone had one of the best games of her four-year collegiate career
netting a career-best 32 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and
career-high tying seven steals. Her
32-point scoring outburst gave her just enough to reach the 1,000-point career
milestone as well. She followed that
impressive outing with 19 points and eight assists in last Saturday's 85-75
road win over Purdue University-Calumet.
On the week, Barone averaged 25.5 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 steals and
3.5 rebounds per game for the Cougars.
She shot a stellar 62 percent (18-for-29) from the floor and 86 percent
(12-for-14) from the foul line.
Saint Xavier (13-5
overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., this evening for a big
NAIA and CCAC showdown against No. 21 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.).
The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
