Hammond, Ind. - Junior forward Brittany Jones (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) recorded 12 points and school record 19 rebounds as No. 11 Saint Xavier University held off a late rally attempt to claim a 85-75 over Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) Saturday afternoon in Hammond, Ind. The Cougars (13-5 overall) led the entire game after jumping out to an early 11-2 lead in the game's opening two minutes. Junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) led all scorers with 23 points for SXU in Saturday's victory, the fourth straight for the team. The previous single-game rebounding mark was 18 set by Erin Hannemann against Robert Morris University on January 13, 2009.
Senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a solid outing for the Cougars finishing with 19 points and game-best eight assists. Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and junior guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) each chipped in 14 points toward the winning effort. Despite trailing the entire game, Purdue-Calumet closed the deficit to four points, 72-68, with just under six minutes remaining in the game. However, a late surge by the Cougars pushed their lead back up to double digits in the closing minutes of play.
Saint Xavier (13-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Tuesday, January 25, for a big Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road match-up against No. 22 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
