CHICAGO - Freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) continued his stellar debut season with another big night as Saint Xavier University scored 50 second-half points to shake off a poor first-half showing and claim a 75-58 win over Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in NAIA men's basketball action Thursday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Karp finished with a double-double performance of 24 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs, and shot an impressive 8-for-11 from the field for the Cougars. SXU improves to 15-5 overall this season and wins its third straight game with Thursday's victory.
Senior forward Jake Listebarger (Harvard, Ill./McHenry County/Richmond-Burton) went perfect from the floor hitting all four of his shot attempts plus his four free throws for 14 points. Sophomore guard Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) scored in double figures as well for Saint Xavier coming off the bench to also contribute 14 points toward the win. The Cougars scored just 25 points in first-half action and trailed by seven points, 32-25, at the break. However, the halftime speech must have rallied the troops, because Saint Xavier came out strong offensively in the second half. SXU scored 50 points in the second frame and shot a blistering 58 percent (14-for-24) from the field. The Cougars tied the game just six minutes after halftime and cruised from there leading by as many as 17 points.
Saint Xavier (15-5 overall/1-1 CCAC) heads to Hammond, Ind., for a non-conference meeting with Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start (central).
