Joliet, Ill. - For the third time this season, Saint Xavier University senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) has claimed the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Division I Player of the Week honor when the conference office released it on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 11 ranked Cougars (11-5 overall) played just one game on the week, but Young was instrumental in SXU's conference opener, a 78-75 victory over CCAC foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) last Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
Young collected 21 points and eight rebounds with one block and a steal in the win over the Lakers. She made several key baskets down the stretch to help the Cougars overcome a seven-point, second-half deficit. She made 42 percent (8-for-19) of her shot attempts and went 5-for-6 from the foul line. Interestingly enough, Shalonda's teammate with the same last name, junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe), has also earned three CCAC Player of the Week awards already this season. In fact, six of the 11 possible weekly honors given out by the conference for the 2010-11 campaign have been claimed by one of the Youngs.
Saint Xavier (11-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) hosts a non-conference game against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on Thursday, January 20. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
