CHICAGO - Avenging a loss in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener for both teams back on December 4, 2010, the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team rolled to a 97-68 win over Roosevelt University (Ill.) behind 25 points and eight rebounds by freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (13-5 overall/1-1 CCAC) ended a three-game losing skid with Saturday's big victory. SXU jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the opening six minutes of play and led by double figures most of the ballgame.
In addition to Karp, freshman forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) also had a solid game posting 15 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars. Sophomore guard Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) provided a nice lift off the bench chipping in 13 points and four rebounds. Saint Xavier was dominant on the boards collecting 56 rebounds compared to just 35 by the Lakers. Roosevelt shot 33 percent (10-for-30) from the field in the first half, which helped the Cougars build a 49-29 halftime advantage. Eleven different players on the SXU roster scored at least two points in Saturday's victory. Junior guard Paul Tometich had the hot hand for Roosevelt scoring a game-best 32 points on 12-for-22 shooting.
Saint Xavier (13-5 overall/1-1 CCAC) continues its home stand with a non-conference game on Tuesday, January 18, against Purdue University-North Central (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
