CHICAGO - A steal by Saint Xavier University freshman point guard Jordan Brandt (Winamac, Ind./Winamac) with three seconds to play kept Roosevelt University from attempting a game-tying three-pointer and preserved a 78-75 win for the home team in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) finished with 21 and 20 points, respectively, for the Cougars and each finished with a team-best eight rebounds in the game. SXU scored 35 points off 29 turnovers by the Lakers.

Senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) had another nice all-around game for Saint Xavier with 13 points, four assists and four steals. Junior guard Peggie Parhas had a huge game for Roosevelt University scoring a game-best 29 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field, including five three-pointers. The Cougars trailed by as many as seven points early in the second half, but came storming back and took a five-point lead, 69-64, with just over five minutes left to play. A key three-point play by freshman forward Chrissy Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) with 2:44 remaining gave SXU a four-point lead, 74-70. However, RU would hit some key free throws and shots down the stretch to keep the game within one possession in the closing minutes. Barone hit three of four free throws in the final 36 seconds to help secure the win.

Saint Xavier (11-5 overall/1-0 CCAC) hosts a non-conference game against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on Thursday, January 20. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
