Kenosha, Wis. - Sophomore outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) finished with 11 kills and 14 digs, but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team could not kick off the program's second season with a win falling to Carthage College (Wis.) Friday night at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. The Cougars (0-1 overall) dropped the match in four sets by scores of 19-25, 25-19, 11-25 and 21-25. After getting into a rhythm in the second set, the SXU offensive attack struggled over the final two frames recording 19 attack errors to just 14 combined kills.
Sophomore right side/middle blocker Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a solid night for the Cougars contributing nine kills, nine digs and four block assists. Freshman outside hitter Johnathan Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton CC/Morton) was tough defensively for Saint Xavier leading the team with 15 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Joe Zahalka (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted four kills, 13 digs and a pair of block assists. Carthage finished the match with 52 total kills compared to 36 for SXU.
Saint Xavier (0-1 overall) continues its season and opens its conference slate on Wednesday, January 19, with a road match against Moody Bible Institute (Ill.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Chicago.
