CHICAGO - Senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) went 4-for-8 with a run scored to help lead the Saint Xavier University softball team to a doubleheader split with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) Friday at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (14-8 overall/8-2 CCAC) shut down CSU in game one allowing just two hits in a 3-0 victory, but the offense did not carry over to game two dropping the nightcap, 2-0.
Freshman righthander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) threw a gem in game one going all seven innings and allowing just two hits, no runs, and no walks with five strikeouts. With the victory, she improved to 5-2 on the season. Nicole Barker finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored, while senior centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Saint Xavier scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore third baseman Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) scored from third base on a wild pitch. The final two runs came on a two-RBI single by Marie Barker in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cougar offense never got on track in the second game of the day en route to the 2-0 loss. Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) led the way going 2-for-2 with a double and a stolen base. She was the only SXU player to record multiple hits in game two. Junior righthander Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) took the loss on the mound for Saint Xavier throwing all seven innings and giving up seven hits, two runs (both earned), and no walks with three strikeouts. She drops to 3-3 on the season with Friday's loss.
SXU (14-8 overall/8-2 CCAC) will host Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on Tuesday, April 17, for a conference doubleheader at the SXU Softball Field. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., weather permitting, in Chicago.
