West Palm Beach, Fla. - Freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished with team-bests of 25 points and seven rebounds, but it was not nearly enough as the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team struggled as a unit falling 91-64 to No. 10 ranked Northwood University (Fla.) Tuesday night in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Cougars had problems securing rebounds in the game posting just 23 boards compared to 46 by the Seahawks. Second-half shooting was also an issue Tuesday as SXU hit just 32 percent of its shots (9-for-28) after the halftime break. It is the third straight loss for the Cougars, who fall to 12-5 overall on the season.
Senior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Snellville) was the only other Saint Xavier player to score in double figures with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Jonathan Dunn led all scorers with 32 points for Northwood University, while sophomore forward Patrick Horstmann posted a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds. The game was tight for the opening 13 minutes of regulation and the score tied with seven minutes left in the opening half. However, the Seahawks could care of the game from there and pulled away to take a 13-point advantage into halftime, 50-37. The second half was all Northwood University as SXU struggled to find its offense scoring just 27 points after the break.
Saint Xavier (12-5 overall/0-1 CCAC) returns to action on Saturday, January 15, with a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) home game against Roosevelt University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars will look to avenge an 89-78 loss to the Lakers in the conference opener back on December 4, 2010.
