CHICAGO - Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) and junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) helped No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier University open the New Year with a bang claiming an 88-76 victory over Georgetown College (Ky.) in NAIA women's basketball action Monday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Shalonda Young led all scorers with 25 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Marissa Young logged a double-double of 23 points and 11 boards. The Cougars (10-5 overall) led 45-38 at the half and then shot a blistering 57 percent (13-for-23) after the break to pull away for the double-digit win.
Senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a nice outing for SXU Monday with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Cougars put pressure on the Tigers throughout the game recording 14 steals, including six by Marissa Young. The steals help to generate 20 turnovers by Georgetown and Saint Xavier took full advantage of the miscues by scoring 20 points off fast break buckets and 26 points off turnovers. The Tigers were led by junior guard Jessica Waddle with 19 points, including five three-pointers. The Cougars opened the game with a 10-2 run and led for a majority of the contest with Georgetown taking a brief four-point lead midway through the first half.
Saint Xavier (10-5 overall) makes the short trip over to Chicago State University (Ill.) for an exhibition game on Thursday, January 6. The exhibition is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
