CHICAGO - Behind 23 points, six rebounds and five assists by senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic), the No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team concluded the first day of the 2010 SXU Holiday Tournament with a 73-56 victory over Spring Hill College (Ala.) Monday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (8-4 overall) applied a ton of defensive pressure and used a 16-2 scoring run midway through the first half to build a 20-8 advantage with 8:27 to play in the opening frame. The Badgers had difficulty breaking the press and turned the ball over 17 times in the first half with 14 coming off of SXU steals.

Junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) also had a nice night for Saint Xavier recording 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) posted 14 points, seven rebounds and six steals toward the winning effort. Freshman forward Sha Sha Buchanan paced Spring Hill College with 15 points and was the only Badger player to score in double figures. The Cougars were impressive down low scoring 50 of their 73 points in the paint. SXU also took advantage of Spring Hill's 30 turnovers in the game with 27 points off turnovers and 16 on fast-break opportunities.

Saint Xavier (8-4 overall) continues tournament play on Tuesday, December 27, with a 7 p.m. game against Grace College (Ind.). The winner of Tuesday's game advances to Wednesday's tournament championship at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
