CHICAGO - Sophomore guard Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) rang up eight three-pointers and finished with team-highs of 30 points and nine rebounds to lead Saint Xavier University to a big 88-61 win over Mount Marty College (S.D.) on the first day of the three-day SXU Midwest Tournament Monday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (11-2 overall) fell behind by eight, 16-8, in the first five minutes of play before storming back to tie the game, 18-18, with just under 12 minutes remaining in the opening half. SXU would control the game the rest of the way taking a double-digit lead into the break, 39-28, and leading by as many as 29 points late in the second half.

Freshman forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) and junior point guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) each chipped in 12 points toward the winning effort for Saint Xavier. Senior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) also scored in double figures for the Cougars Monday with 10 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Peters posted six rebounds, while Gilgenbach dished out a game-high seven assists. SXU dominated the second half shooting 54 percent (19-for-35) from the field, including nine of its 20 three-point attempts (45 percent). Junior forward Jeff Viereck was one of three Lancers to score 10 points in the game and also finished with a game-best 10 rebounds.

Saint Xavier (11-2 overall/0-1 CCAC) advances to tomorrow's 6 p.m. game and will face Siena Heights University (Mich.). SHU defeated Viterbo University (Wis.) in today's 4 p.m. game by a score of 72-70 in double overtime. The winner of Tuesday's SXU-SHU game will qualify for Wednesday's championship game at 6 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
