CHICAGO - A penalty kick goal by senior forward Janaina Novaes in the game's 50th minute proved to be the difference as No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University could not pull off an upset over No. 1 Lee University (Tenn.) falling 1-0 in NAIA women's soccer action Thursday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Both teams had trouble getting good shots off in extremely windy conditions Thursday afternoon, but Lee was able to take advantage of the game's only penalty kick.
Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg) was a force in goal for the Cougars Thursday recording 10 saves. Lee had 17 shots in the game, including 10 shots on goal; while SXU posted seven shots with four of the shots on goal. Senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) led the Cougars with two shots on goal in the game. Saint Xavier (14-3-1 overall/8-1 CCAC) begins postseason play on Saturday, October 20, with a game against No. 8 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the opening round of the 2007 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
