CHICAGO - Freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds as No. 25 Saint Xavier University held back pesky Goshen College (Ind.), 82-78, Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars end their two-game losing streak and improve to 9-2 overall this season. SXU shot 54 percent (15-for-28) from the field and scored 47 points in the second half to pull off the non-conference win.
Also scoring in double figures for the Cougars Saturday were sophomore point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) with 14 points, junior forward Zach Opheim (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) with 13 points and sophomore forward Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) with 11 points off the bench. Opheim also finished with nine rebounds for Saint Xavier. SXU led most of the game, but the Leafs would continue to rally back and took a one-point lead, 67-66, with 4:30 to play in the game. However, the Cougars would get some big baskets down the stretch, including a pair of lay-ups by Green, and sink four of their six free-throw attempts in the final minute to secure the victory.
Saint Xavier (9-2 overall/0-1 CCAC) returns to action on Tuesday, December 14, with a non-conference game against Judson University (Ill.). Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
