Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Division I Player of the Week when the conference office released the honor late Tuesday to honor her performance in SXU‘s three games last week. The No. 6 ranked Cougars (7-2 overall) went 2-1 on the week and faced off against two top-15 NAIA foes, including No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Union University (Tenn.). It was the second time this season that Young has earned the weekly honor after earning the first one back on November 9.
Averaging 15.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, Young helped Saint Xavier to wins over Judson University (Ill.), 69-33, and No. 14 Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.), 73-60. Saint SXU's lone loss came to No. 1 Union, 71-63, where Young had 13 points and eight rebounds. Her biggest production came against No. 14 Trevecca Nazarene with a double-double performance of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Against Judson, she posted 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and six steals. In the CCAC, Young is currently second in steals (3.1) and blocked shots (1.2) and third in scoring (16.3) and rebounding (8.4).
Saint Xavier (7-2 overall) heads to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Daytona Beach Shootout, which begins on Sunday, December 19. The Cougars open the event with a 4 p.m. (central) game against No. 15 ranked Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.).
