CHICAGO - Behind 15 points and six steals by senior
guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier
University women's basketball team used its defensive pressure to make things
difficult for Judson University (Ill.) and pulled away early for a 69-33
victory Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (6-1 overall) jumped out to a 12-4
lead in the first four minutes of play and led by 17 points at the half,
39-22. SXU racked up 14 steals in the
opening frame, which helped generate 20 first-half turnovers by the Eagles.
Junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's
College/Monroe) also had a solid all-around game for the Cougars finishing the
night with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals. All 11 players on the Saint Xavier roster
scored in Tuesday's game, including senior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet,
Ill./Marian Catholic), who made her season debut after missing the first six
games with an injury. Barone posted six
points, five rebounds and four steals towards the winning effort. SXU's suffocating defense really went to work
in the second half with Judson limited to just 1-for-22 shooting from the floor
and 11 points after the break.
Saint Xavier (6-1
overall) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., this weekend to take part in the two-day
CCAC Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The Cougars have a pair of tough match-ups on
the weekend with a Friday game at 5:30 p.m. against No. 1 ranked Union
University (Tenn.) followed by a Saturday contest against No. 14 Trevecca
Nazarene University (Tenn.) at 1 p.m.
