South Bend, Ind. - Junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) led all scorers with a career-high 28 points as the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University women‘s basketball team rolled to a 92-61 win over Holy Cross College (Ind.) Tuesday night at McKenna Arena in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars (5-1 overall) shot an impressive 52 percent (31-for-60) from the floor in the game and held an eight-point advantage, 47-39, at the half. In the first collegiate start of her young career, freshman point guard Jordan Brandt (Winamac, Ind./Winamac) had a nice outing as well finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and five steals for SXU.
Young shot 75 percent (9-for-12) from the field and 8-for-11 (73 percent) from the charity stripe en route to her career night. Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) posted a double-double for the second straight game recording 15 points and game-best 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Saint Xavier Tuesday was junior guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) with 10 points to go along with four steals. Sophomore guard Lauren Malinowski led Holy Cross College with 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field. The Cougars racked up 18 steals in the game, which helped to create 33 turnovers by the Saints. SXU started to pull away late in the first half and took an eight-point lead into the break. The second half was all Cougars as the team continued to build on its lead and led by as many 34 points with just over three minutes to play in the game.
Saint Xavier (5-1 overall) returns home to host Judson University (Ill.) in non-conference action on Tuesday, November 30. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
