Bellevue, Neb. - Despite team-bests of nine kills and two blocks (one solo) by junior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University women's volleyball team fell in its opening round match of the 2010 NAIA Volleyball National Championship to No. 21 Bellevue University (Neb.) Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Lozier Center in Bellevue, Neb. The Cougars dropped the match in three sets by scores of 16-25, 17-25 and 21-25. SXU ends its season with a record of 23-14 overall.

Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) finished with eight kills and 11 digs for the Cougars, while fellow sophomore outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) chipped in eight kills and 10 digs. Sophomore libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) had another solid defensive outing with a team-high 18 digs. Junior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) provided the offensive set-up with 27 assists. The Bruins were led by junior outside hitter Ashley Wurdeman and freshman outside hitter Annie Benson, who each finished with 10 kills.

Saint Xavier (23-14 overall/7-4 CCAC) made only its second NAIA Volleyball Championship appearance this season and first since 2000 after winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament last week. The Cougars upset No. 1 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) to qualify for the tournament's championship match and earn the automatic berth to Nationals.
