CHICAGO - Freshman forward Brad Karp (Valparaiso,
Ind./Valparaiso) finished with a career-best 34 points to lead the Saint Xavier
University men's basketball team to another big win by a score of 88-74 over
Harris-Stowe State University (Mo.) in the first of the two-day SXU Classic at
the Shannon Center in Chicago. Karp shot
an impressive 13-for-18 from the floor (72.2 percent) and also collected six
rebounds to help keep the Cougars perfect on the young season at 6-0
overall. Freshman forward Mark Peters
(Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) also had a nice outing off the bench for SXU posting
14 points, nine rebounds and five assists on the night.
Also scoring in
double figures for Saint Xavier Friday were junior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du
Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) and senior guard DeVon Chandler (Collinsville,
Ill./Collinsville). Each contributed 10
points toward the winning effort.
Sophomore point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) led
the Cougars with seven assists. The SXU
offense had little trouble shooting the ball Friday hitting 54 percent
(29-for-54) of its shots in the game, including 6-of-14 (43 percent) from
beyond the three-point arc. In the
opening minutes, Harris-Stowe State was able to build an eight-point
advantage. However, midway through the
first half, the Cougars rallied and took the lead for the remainder of the
game. SXU led, 42-33, at the half and went
up by as many as 19 points in second-half action.
Saint Xavier (6-0 overall) wraps up the four-team SXU Classic on
Saturday, November 20, with a match-up against East-West University
(Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 3
p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
