CHICAGO - Behind team-highs of 23 points and 13
rebounds by senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), the No. 6
ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team held off a strong
second-half run by Trinity International University (Ill.) to pick up a 79-71
victory Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (4-1 overall) led 49-29 at the
halftime break behind strong shooting and stingy defense, but the Trojans
regrouped and were able to close to within two points, 70-68, with just two-and-a-half
minutes to play in the game. Fortunately
for SXU, junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe)
came through in the clutch scoring eight of her team's final nine points.
finished the game right behind Shalonda Young with 21 points, seven rebounds
and five assists. She was also a perfect
10-for-10 from the free-throw line in Tuesday's win. Sophomore point guard Romisha Taylor
(Chicago, Ill./Von Stueben) also had a nice outing for SXU Tuesday finishing
with nine points and seven assists. The
Cougars shot 53 percent (17-for-32) in first-half action and led by as many as
25 points (49-24) with 1:29 remaining before halftime. TIU was led by senior forward Reanna Perera,
who finished with a game-high 24 points.
Saint Xavier (4-1
overall) heads downtown to face NCAA Division I Loyola University (Ill.) in an
exhibition game on Saturday, November 20.
