Palos Heights, Ill. - Behind game-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds by senior guard Marco Samimy (Peterson Woods, Ill./CICS-Northtown Academy), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team cruised to a 98-35 victory over St. Louis Christian College (Mo.) Saturday afternoon at the Trinity Christian College Mitchell Classic in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (4-0 overall) dominated the game from the onset jumping out to a 29-0 lead to open the first 10 minutes of play. SXU shot 57 percent (40-for-72) from the field in the game and controlled the rebounding as well with a 54-21 advantage on the boards.
In addition to Samimy, three other Cougars scored in double figures Saturday, including sophomore forward Scott Taloff (Bedford Park, Ill./St. Laurence) with 24 points as well. Senior point guard DeVon Chandler (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) posted 16 points to go along with a game-best and career-high 12 assists. Junior forward Brian Sherwood (Oak Forest, Ill./Judson University/Oak Forest) was the other double-digit scorer for SXU with 14 points as well as 10 rebounds. In fact, Taloff, Chandler and Sherwood all set new career-highs in scoring in Saturday's game, while Samimy tied his previous-best scoring mark. The Cougars hit 11 three-pointers in the game and shot at an impressive 44 percent (11-for-25) clip from beyond the arc.
Saint Xavier (4-0 overall) returns home to host Trinity International University (Ill.) in non-conference action on Tuesday, November 16. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
