Whiting, Ind. - Behind a career-high 26 points by
junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe), the No.
6 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team held off a late rally
by Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) and pulled out a 78-71 road victory
Tuesday evening at the Crimson Wave Athletic Facility in Whiting, Ind. After a tight second half, the Cougars got
key baskets from junior forward Mary Kusner (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and
freshman forward Chrissy Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) in the final two
minutes to pull away for good. Young
also finished with five rebounds and four steals in Tuesday's win.
Senior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) also
had a productive outing for SXU posting 16 points and game-best 11
rebounds. Junior guard Michelle Tourtillott (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) was the other Cougar to score in
double figures with 12 points. SXU came
out strong leading by as many as 10 points multiple times in the first half,
but the Crimson Wave kept storming back and cut the deficit to two points,
34-32, at the half. The second half was
back-and-forth with the score tied eight times before the Cougars were finally
able to pull away for good in the closing minutes.
Saint Xavier (2-0
overall) heads to Davenport, Iowa, this weekend to play in the Saint Ambrose
University Classic. The Cougars open
with a 5 p.m. game on Saturday, November 13, against AIB College of Business
(Iowa) and then close things out on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against host
