Whiting, Ind. - Playing back in his home state of Indiana, Saint Xavier University freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) felt right at home dropping a game-best 25 points on Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a 68-53 win Tuesday night at the Crimson Wave Athletic Facility in Whiting, Ind. As a team, the Cougars (2-0 overall) struggled shooting the ball hitting just 44 percent (24-for-55) of its shots from the field, but Karp shined shooting 56 percent (9-for-16) for the game. Junior forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) also played well for SXU hitting 6-for-10 of his shots from the floor for 14 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Karp was also tough defensively for Saint Xavier posting a game-best four steals. Junior guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) led the Cougars on the boards with 12 rebounds, while senior guard Stan Mayfield (Snellville, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) chipped in 10 points off the bench. SXU led 36-22 at the halftime break after shooting an impressive 49 percent (17-for-35) in first half action. However, the shooting cooled off for both teams in the second half with neither team able to hit better than a 35-percent clip. The Cougars out-rebounded the Crimson Wave Tuesday by a 43-32 margin.

Saint Xavier (2-0 overall) heads to Palos Heights, Ill., this weekend to take part in the two-day Trinity Christian College Mitchell Classic. The Cougars take on Viterbo University (Wis.) on Friday, November 12, at 6 p.m. SXU closes out the tournament with a 1 p.m. match-up against St. Louis Christian College on Saturday.
