Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University senior guard
Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech) was dubbed the first Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Basketball Division I Player of
the Week of the 2010-11 season after a huge performance in the team's big
season-opening win over No. 25 ranked McKendree University (Ill.)
Saturday. Young finished with game-bests
of 29 points, nine rebounds and five steals as the No. 6 ranked Cougars picked
up an 86-67 victory over the visiting Bearcats.
She led a Cougar defensive effort that helped force 38 McKendree turnovers
behind 20 steals.
Young shot an impressive 12-for-20 from the field (60
percent) Saturday and hit four of her five free-throw attempts in the
game. She also was a force on the glass
with her nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. The 29-point performance was a career-best as
well for the senior guard. Her previous
high scoring total was 22 points against Aquinas College (Mich.) back on
December 27, 2009.
Saint Xavier (1-0
overall) takes on Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on the road tonight at
the Crimson Wave Athletic Facility in Whiting, Ind. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
