Behind a game-high 29 points by senior guard Shalonda Young
(Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team opened its 2010-11 season with an impressive 86-67 victory over No. 25 ranked McKendree University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Young made 12 of her 20 shot attempts (60 percent) from the floor and also had game-bests of nine rebounds and five steals in the big opening win. The Cougars were tough defensively recording 20 steals, which helped force a majority of the Bearcats' 38 turnovers.
Junior guard Marissa Young (Monroe, Wis./St. Joseph's College/Monroe) also had a nice game for SXU posting 18 points, four assists and three steals. She hit nine of her 11 free-throw attempts in the game. The Cougars led virtually the entire game and jumped out to a 39-27 lead at the half. In the second half, SXU hit 55 percent (18-for-33) of its shots from the field to pull away. McKendree was led by senior guard Katie Fullerton with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall) heads to Whiting, Ind., on Tuesday, November 9, to take on Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The road game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
