CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University junior Tom Lynch (Frankfort, Ill./Southern Illinois University/Joliet JC/Lincoln-Way East) was one of just 42 college football place-kickers nationwide to be recognized by The Fred Mitchell Award for his excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of October. The kickers represent nearly every division of college football with 13 of the honorees hailing from Football Championship Series (FCS) schools, 13 from the NCAA Division II ranks, 10 out of NCAA Division III and six from the NAIA. Lynch was also included on the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List in August and was honored by the organization for his excellence over the month of September as well.

"October had quite a few college football games decided by late scores by place-kickers, long snappers, holders and blockers on special teams," said Mitchell. "Some place-kickers throughout the country have already established single-season records at their schools. We are pleased to recognize place-kickers that were nominated by their schools for extraordinary performance during the month."

Lynch is currently second on the Cougars in scoring with 85 points and has connected on all six of his field goals this season and 67 of his 69 extra-point attempts. On October 11, he was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season. He leads all NAIA kickers in total points with 85 and moved up to No. 2 on SXU's all-time kickers scoring list last month. SXU is ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA Football Top 25 Poll and has a 10-0 overall record. Lynch has also served as a summer camp day counselor at a local church, volunteered his time at the PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) homeless shelter in Hazel Crest, worked as an Emergency Management Association volunteer at the Department of Homeland Security in Palos Hills and tutored kickers at his former high school, Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort, Ill.

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award (also known as the Fred Mitchell Award, www.fredmitchellaward.com) is provided to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker among more than 600 FCS, Division II, III and NAIA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community.

The Award's Watch List is released in August, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season and the winner (who is not required to be on the Watch List) is announced in mid-December. The school of the Award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy will be presented on February 21, 2010 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall.
