CHICAGO- Led by game-bests of 19 points and seven
assists by sophomore point guard Roosevelt Green (Tinley Park, Ill./Markham),
the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team scored 15 points in overtime
to pick up a 105-93 victory over Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) in its
season opener Saturday afternoon at the Shannon Center in Chicago. In addition to Green, the Cougars had five
other players score in double figures in Saturday's big home victory. SXU also played solid defense in the extra
period limiting the Sea Lions to just three points and 0-for-11 shooting from
Senior guard Stan Mayfield (Grayson, Ga./McKendree University/Shiloh) and senior forward Jake Listebarger (Harvard, Ill./McHenry County College/Richmond-Burton) each
provided huge lifts off the bench scoring 15 points apiece. Freshman guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso,
Ind./Valparaiso) had a solid debut as well scoring 13 points for the
Cougars. Also finishing in double
figures Saturday for SXU were junior forward Phil Riggs (Rockford, Ill./Boylan
Catholic) and freshman forward Mark Peters (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) with
12 points apiece. Peters also led the
team on the boards with six rebounds. The
Cougars shot well from three-point range hitting 10 of their 19 long-range
attempts for 53 percent. The Sea Lions
were led by junior guard Wil Bush, who finished with 16 points.
Saint Xavier (1-0
overall) continues its season on Tuesday, November 9, with a road game against
Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.).
The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in Whiting, Ind.
