CHICAGO - Despite scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Saint Xavier University baseball team mustered just four hits and no runs the rest of the way falling 6-3 to the University of St. Francis (Ill.) in non-conference action Tuesday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Senior third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a stolen base to lead the Cougars, who fall to 12-12 on the season with the loss.
SXU finished the game with six total hits, four of which came in the first inning. USF racked up 11 hits in the ballgame with 10 of the 11 coming in the game's final five innings. Saint Xavier began the bottom of the first inning with three straight singles by sophomore centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist), freshman left fielder Tony Testin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), and senior second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), respectively. A fielding error at second base kept the bases loaded with no outs and brought Skelly home from third before Tantillo wrapped up the inning's scoring with a two-RBI single to right field.
Down 3-0 through the first four innings, the Fighting Saints answered in the top of the fifth with three singles of their own to start the inning and load the bases with no outs. A walk, a sacrifice fly, and a balk helped plate three runs for USF tying the game, 3-3. St. Francis took the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth on a RBI single to left field by senior shortstop Brad Netzel. The Fighting Saints put two more insurance runs on the board in the eighth on a two-RBI single to right field by sophomore left fielder Steve Kehr.
Freshman lefthander Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) took the loss for SXU in relief throwing one inning and allowing three hits, one run (earned), and a walk. Sophomore rightie Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards) got the starting nod for the Cougars and pitched five innings giving up four hits, three runs (all earned), and five walks with three strikeouts. Junior righthander Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) threw the final three innings of Tuesday's game and allowed four hits, two runs (both earned), and a walk with a strikeout.
