Men's Cross Country - Mon, Oct. 25, 2010

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Some of the NAIA's best cross country teams from around the Midwest converged on Grand Rapids, Mich., this past weekend for the 2010 NAIA Great Lakes Challenge XC Invitational and the Saint Xavier University men's team was no exception. This year's meet boasted 28 teams and 313 total runners with the Cougars finishing ninth overall. Leading the pack for SXU again was freshman standout Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice). Corcoran finished 37th overall in a personal record time of 25:53.

Following Corcoran was freshman Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) in 79th place with a time of 26:36 and then freshman Chris Sarna (Palos Park, Ill./Stagg) in 85th place at 26:39. Closely following that duo was another twosome of junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 93rd with a 26:45 clocking and freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in 99th at 26:51. Junior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) was next across the finish line for Saint Xavier in 109th place with a time of 26:58 and the final scorer for the Cougars was junior Rich Eber (Oak Lawn, Ill./Illinois State University/Brother Rice) at No. 123 in 27:10.

"A consistent solid performance," said SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "We ran as a steady group. Again, our freshmen were our leaders and what that means is that we will show quicker improvement as the season draws to a close. We will be ready for the conference meet and I am expecting good things to happen."

Saint Xavier takes this weekend off and then heads to Elgin, Ill., for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Championships on Saturday, November 6. The meet will be hosted by Judson University (Ill.) with the men's race set to start at 11 a.m.
