Mount Pleasant, Iowa - Senior quarterback Anthony Kropp (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) completed 24 of his 31 pass attempts for 251 yards and four touchdowns (one rushing) to help lead No. 3 Saint Xavier University to a convincing 65-6 win over Iowa Wesleyan College in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover action Saturday evening at Mapleleaf Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. The Cougars (9-0 overall) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and scored 65 unanswered points before the Tigers found the end zone with 5:05 remaining in the final frame. The 65-point output was the highest single-game total this season for SXU and the most since October 24, 2009, in a 66-6 home victory over IWC.

There were plenty of notable performers for the Cougars Saturday with senior running back Donnie Selby (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) finishing up with 75 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown and a 10-yard touchdown reception. Junior running back KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) racked up 57 yards on the ground with a score, while freshman Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also finished with 18 rushing yards and a TD. Senior wide receiver Mike Maher (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic) led the team with eight catches for 75 yards, while sophomore wideout Wes Gastel (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) pulled down four receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown.

SXU scored on its first three offensive drives of the game with Kropp scrambling in from three yards out on a keeper with 12:57 remaining in the first quarter. Gastel would hook up with Kropp from 35 yards out to put the Cougars ahead, 14-0, at the 8:43 mark of the quarter. Selby would bust through the Tiger defense for a two-yard rushing touchdown with 2:50 left in the opening quarter. Nearly midway through the second frame, Franklin would find a hole and score from nine yards out to put Saint Xavier up, 28-0. Kropp would then find sophomore wide receiver Corey Wennmacher (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) open for a 33-yard strike with 6:43 remaining in the half. Just 39 seconds later, senior Pat Geary (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) would find a seam and score on a 43-yard punt return to keep the Cougars rolling.

Just before the end of the first half, Selby would locate the end zone again on a 10-yard reception from Kropp to give SXU a 49-0 halftime lead. A 26-yard field goal by junior kicker A.J. Nichols (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter gave Saint Xavier a 52-0 advantage. Pesek would add a fourth-quarter touchdown on a five-yard run and sophomore defensive back Nick Pecho (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) would finish off the scoring spree with a 25-yard interception return. IWC would score its lone touchdown on a nine-yard pass play. The Cougars are now averaging 54.0 points per game this season.

Saint Xavier (9-0 overall/5-0 MSFA) will finish up the 2010 regular season with back-to-back home games against ranked NAIA foes. The Cougars take on No. 19 Walsh University (Ohio) on Saturday, October 30, at 1 p.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field before wrapping up with a November 6 match-up against No. 7 University of Saint Francis (Ind.).
