St. Augustine, Fla. - For the second consecutive game, two late goals by the opposition hurt the No. 16 ranked Saint Xavier University men's soccer team. The Cougars fell 2-0 to NCAA Division II Flagler College (Fla.) Friday evening at Saints Field in St. Augustine, Fla. SXU finished with seven shots-on-goal in the game, including two by junior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill../Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley). With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 8-4-1 overall, while the Saints improved to 8-3-1 on the year.
Flagler took a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute when freshman forward Zach Shanahan took a pass from sophomore midfielder Joseph Toby into the left corner and sent the ball into the back of the net. The Saints would add an insurance goal in the 75th minute after a shot by junior midfielder Pol Berenguer deflected off of Saint Xavier freshman keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) right to junior forward Mack Hough for the rebound shot. Held finished the game with four saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (8-4-1 overall/4-0-1 CCAC) returns home to take on conference foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Wednesday, October 20. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
