CHICAGO - A pair of unassisted, second-half goals by sophomores Tammy Contorno (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) were exactly what Saint Xavier University needed to earn a 3-1 victory over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's soccer action Wednesday evening at Stuart Field in Chicago. The win, SXU's fifth straight, also kept the team's perfect conference record intact at 6-0-0, while improving its overall mark to 10-4-0. With the loss, IIT drops to 6-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the CCAC this season.
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Capuano put the Scarlet Hawks ahead early on with an unassisted goal from 15 yards out in the game's seventh minute. However, Saint Xavier wasted little time knotting the game at 1-1 when senior forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) found the back right corner of the net just before the 10th minute of play. Junior midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) posted the assist on the game-tying goal. The first half closed with the game still tied and remained so until the 51st minute when Contorno put a deep shot past the IIT keeper to put SXU ahead, 2-1. Fifteen minutes later, Peele used her left foot for a nice shot to give the Cougars some added insurance. Junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) posted eight saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (10-4-0 overall/6-0-0 CCAC) faces a tough challenge on Tuesday, October 19, taking on conference rival and No. 11 ranked Robert Morris University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
